One new item turned up in the past two days: a federal investment in free manufacturing training for small businesses in Native communities. Here’s what you need to know.
For Native entrepreneurs
SBA Empower to Grow (E2G) manufacturing training awards
On October 19, the SBA’s Office of Native American Affairs gave about $9.5 million to two training providers. Navajo Technical University received about $4.5 million to serve New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah. Chippewa Sustainable Solutions received $5 million for North Dakota, with a focus on advanced 3D-printing-style manufacturing and friction stir welding. Both will offer free classes, hands-on workshops, and one-on-one advising for small manufacturers, especially workers at 8(a) and HUBZone-eligible businesses. The grant money went to the training providers, so business owners don’t apply for cash. Instead, reach out to the provider in your region to sign up for the free training. E2G used to be called the 7(j) program. Learn more
