Community Snapshot: Income and Benefits

Based on U.S. Census Bureau data and the American Community Survey (ACS), there has been a significant economic shift. This change has occurred in the Hannahville Indian Community since the early 1990s. The introduction of tribal gaming primarily drives this shift.

Income and Economic Data (1994–2025)

Historically, the community faced severe economic hardship. According to the 1990 Decennial Census, the per capita income for the Hannahville community was just $4,625. In contrast, Michigan’s statewide average was $14,154.

The next table reflects more recent estimates from the Census Reporter and ACS 5-Year Estimates (typically covering up to 2023–2024):

Employment and Benefits

The economic landscape changed with the opening of the Island Resort and Casino. This facility transformed the community from one subsisting on minimal federal dollars to a regional economic driver.

  • Regional Impact: The tribe is now a major employer in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. In 2024, tribal business entities in Michigan reported an average wage of approximately $59,971 for direct employees.
  • Community Distribution: The tribe distributes “2 percent money” (from gaming revenue) to local governments for community services. These services include law enforcement and healthcare. In recent years, this has amounted to roughly $600,000 annually, suggesting an annual tribal gaming revenue of approximately $30 million.

Demographic Context

  • Population Growth: The population on reservation and trust lands grew from 395 in 2000 to 720 in 2020.
  • Housing: As of 2024/2025, approximately 56% of owner-occupied housing units are valued under $100,000.
  • Education: About 40% of the population holds a high school diploma as their highest level of education, with 7.6% holding a Bachelor’s degree or higher.

Note on 2025 Data: While the Census Bureau releases annual estimates, full 2025 datasets are generally finalized in late 2026. Current figures for 2025 are based on the latest ACS 5-Year Estimates and tribal economic impact reports.
